24-Hour Comics Day 2013 date announced

ComicsPRO has announced the date for the 2013 24-Hour Comics Day. Starting in 2013, and going forward, 24-Hour Comics Day will be the first Saturday in October. In 2013, the 10th annual 24-Hour Comics Day will be held on Oct. 5. The announcement was made at the ComicsPRO Annual Members Meeting, held this year in Atlanta, Ga. “The 24-Hour Comics Day committee has decided to make 24-Hour Comics Day the first Saturday of October every year, based on feedback from participants,” said ComicsPRO director executive director Amanda Emmert. 24-Hour Comics Day is an annual challenge for cartoonists to produce a 24-page comic book written, drawn, and completed in 24 consecutive hours. ComicsPRO, the comic book specialty retailer trade group, organizes the day. ComicsPRO invites comic book artists, whether professional or amateur, young or old, to check out a local venue or try the challenge on their own. Host sites should register at www.24hourcomicsday.com, and those who wish to participate can go to www.24hourcomicsday.com and look for events nearby as the event day nears. – Matt Price http://blog.newsok.com/nerdage

A Night At The Sorrento Hotel, Seattle, WA

I wanted to respectfully report back on my solo 24 Hour Comics Day at the Sorrento Hotel in Seattle, WA. This was a unique challenge since I went it alone and had all the stimulation, and possible distractions, of staying at a landmark luxury hotel. The Sorrento Hotel, by the way, is the oldest luxury hotel in Seattle, dating back to 1909. With the help of sponsorship by Seattle’s leading comics shop, Comics Dungeon, I was able to participate in this adventure.

So, I just wanted to share with you what is possible if you manage your time right and just keep at it. I took part in 24HCD, as a guest of the hotel, so I was there from check-in at 4pm up until check-out at noon. The result was the beginning of a larger book. What I was able to accomplish so far was a 12-page story, “A Night at the Sorrento,” which you can view here.

The Hunt Club is a swank bar full of character and charm. As for drinks, I recommend, The Madison, a delightful vodka cocktail. But their specialty cocktails keep changing.

It occurred to me that maybe I should take a photo of what I ate that night. This is part of my lamb burger, which was quite good.

The Hunt Club is a lively and mellow place. It caters to all types of personalities. If you’re friendly, and keep pace with ordering a drink or two, you can manage to stay awhile and get some drawing done, and then come back later, for more.

As a guest of the hotel, you can make yourself at home and spend some time in the Fireside Room. It’s an inspiring and relaxing spot.

Here’s a sample of the lovely pattern work you’ll find in the carpeting. There are various patterns to be seen and enjoyed.

Ah, there’s my bed and, look, it hasn’t been slept in! Of course, 24 Hour Comics Day suggested guidelines certainly allow you to look out for your health and you can take breaks when needed. This is a creative pursuit, not boot camp!

Here is a page from my comic, “A Night at the Sorrento.”

And, finally, time for breakfast! In this case, only the very best, lobster benedict.

What happens next is that I am developing this into “A Night at the Sorrento and Other Stories,” which will bring together my 24 Hour Comics Day comics for the last three years. This will be a Kickstarter campaign and so I invite you all to keep an eye our for it and follow me here. I hope everyone who participated this year came away with something worthwhile that they can work with in the future. I will see you all next year!

Recap: 24 Hours Comics Day in Interior Alaska

Just posted an account (link here) of yesterday’s event at The Comic Shop in Fairbanks, AK over on the Ink & Snow blog.

We had an excellent time, with many participants turning out to draw – seven of us starting at noon on Saturday with approximately another dozen artists sitting in for random sessions – or folks just showing up to say hi, offer encouragement and check on our coffee supply. Ultimately only four were successful in meeting the challenge, but lots of people learned about the annual event and got a chance to observe demonstrations of the craft, and we’re definitely stoked about doing it again in 2013 – see you all there!
